Japanese My Way App Reviews

Awesome tool!

I am impressed about this tool. I like the game style learning method and its handwriting recognition is pretty good!

amazing tool

Japanese My Way is great way to practice writing kanji and to study vocabulary.

Sweet!

Flash cards are sweet, very easy to use, and look, well... flash! Dictionary is good, though there are a lot of kanji versions of words that are not really used. Maybe theyre used in old literature or something? Luckily the dictionary is sorted by JLPT level, so the most common words come at the top. Writing is GREAT, though as the other reviewer said it can sometimes be a little too forgiving. Great app for practicing your vocab and kanji during those spare few minutes.

IPad version needs work

It is very obvious that this was written for iPhone and very hastily adapted for iPad. The features of the app are great but the implementation is very problematic. Some issues: - Doesnt support landscape orientation - Kanji writing and a few other features dont use the full screen - The app crashes when I try to add Kanji characters to a deck - Overall app flow is awkward I love the app for what it does but I think it needs a rewrite and/or redesign for iPad. Ill be waiting for an update.

iPad images are misleading

This thing as it currently stands is useless on the iPad. The working area shown in the images above actually occupy a very small area of the screen. It fails to properly recognize the kanji strokes unless they are very close to overlaying the sample. You can draw the kanji correclty but if it is out of position (too high or low, or too small) it fails to recognize it. You cannot create a new deck, the app crashes each and every time. This app attempts to fill a legit study need, kanji stroke practice, but fails in the execution. I hope they update it soon, because if the issues are resolved, it will be a very useful study aid.

Great for Writing!

I only just purchased this app for my iPad, so I cant comment on previous versions, but for me it works great. Ive been looking for an app that will check my kanji strokes for accuracy and this is the only one Ive found so far, but it seems to work pretty well. Not sure why the other reviewer was having problems with drawing as I seem to be able to draw any size of position and it works ok, though I noticed it can be a little fussy about the hooks at the end of some strokes. Also, sometimes the kanji shown on the answer looks a little different from the drawing which can be a little confusing but since I can show an outline of the drawing while Im practicing I wasnt too worried about that. Would be nice if it could give you a percentage score on how good your writing was. Hope they keep coming with the updates.

Finally an excellent app

Awesome, fun and well worth the dinero. Thank you

Brilliant App for practicing kanji. Sugoi!!!

I really like the flashcard decks and that you can build your own custom decks. Having to write the kanji really helps me retain it. I would like to see an easier way to make custom decks. When I emailed them they got back to me same day and said that is planned for the next update. Possibly being able to import from files. This will definitely earn it 5 stars from me. Thanks Rakudasoft!

Great App for learning to write kanji

Although primarily promoted as a Japanese/English dictionary, this app is much more. The ability to practice writing kanji with your finger or stylus with built in stroke validator sets this app apart from other Japanese dictionary apps. Well worth the money and excellent support with immediate responses to questions from the developer. Apps like Japanese My Way make owning an iPad a real pleasure and a great learning tool. I look forward to the next update when navigating the app should get easier.

Value for Money!

I LOVE this app, I wish Id found it sooner. It has more stuff than apps three or four times the price. The dictionary always seems to come up with the word Im looking for near the top. Other dictionaries I seem to have to search through a lot of entries to find the one Im looking for. I did have to uninstall and re-install the app because no dictionary entries showed up the first time. Not sure what happened there. Kanji writing is what I got the app for mostly and I aced my last quiz after practicing using this app. Biggest downside is that I wish they had some instructions because it took me a while to figure out what was going on in some screens. I can see how the other reviewer got confused over how the flash cards worked. Ive used paper flash cards before, so I figured it out in the end, but some instructions would have saved me some time. All in all though, a very nice app.

Paid for nothing

I paid for this...installed it...doesnt open. Just goes back to my menu. Took it off, installed it again...restarted...still doesnt work. Its like a bloody scam. How do i go about getting my money back?

Crashes :(

This app was wonderful until I updated it. Now it crashes as soon as I open it up. :(

I absolutely love this ap!

I have been systematically trying different kanji studying aps and this one is by far the best for intermediate-advanced users. Being able to create your own flash card sets that have accurate translations, quickly and easily is an amazing tool especially if you are studying for a language class. The sample sentence look up is also very useful for seeing words used in various contexts ( which helps you get a better understanding of grammar.) The kanji writing practice feature has also helped me to improve my handwriting as well as my character recall. If you only buy one kanji ap, this should be it. I you buy two, I would say get this and kanji dream.

Sad and looking elsewhere

I would not recommend this product for anyone more skilled than extreme beginner. I was hoping for a serious Kanji study system (I have a BA in Japanese) to maintain and expand my knowledge, but the content in this app is very weak, and the design not very facilitative for learning in any serious way.

Thanks for the constant improvements!

I use this a lot for my kanji and vocabulary flash cards. This app is aboslutely indespensible. I use this alongside with the "Japanese" app. If you cant afford the app that usually retails around 15 bucks (10 bucks at the time of this review), get this one. You pretty much get it all. I also recommend "Kotoba!," which is a free Japanese dictionary.

Great app!

I admit, I got this app because it was cheap and I didnt want to fork out $10-15 for the other apps out there. I was surprised by how many features it offers, and the updates just keep coming. the latest one that allows kanji lookup by Japanese reading is especially helpful. I mostly use this for memorizing kanji, and the ability to create my own flash decks means I can personalize the app to my textbook. I can share my decks with other students, too, which is nice. All in all, this is a great app at a great price!

Not the greatest dictionary

I tried to look up the word lamb and the dictionary gives me three different kanji spellings. How would I know which one is right?

Studying Japanese? Get this now.

Ive studied Japanese seriously for 8 years out of the past 15. In college, while living there, occasionally when the mood struck me...and although I can speak well, Im still functionally illiterate. Anyone who knows Japanese knows that, without kanji, you really cant get the vocabulary necessary to really advance. So when I speak, it flows well, but Im trapped into sounding like an uneducated high school student. All this would have been different if I had had this app on an ipad so many years ago. Im sure Id be watching kurosawa films in the original and chuckling at the refined wordplay. Ok..probably not. Whats amazing is that there is really no reason reason for me to study kanji right now - dont live there, job, career, relationship, travel. But here I am tracing out kanji and covering gaps that have plagued me for a long time. Keeps the brain fresh. Suddenly, Im enthusiastic about studying Kanji. Yeah..reread that one again. While the help and explanation of features is still a work in progress, the developer responded to my question with a detailed answer within hours. and lastly...2.99 for the ipad app. Ridiculous how much other language ipad apps - all languages, not just Japanese. I think this is only the second app Ive been motivated to write about. I love studying kanji..anything or anyone that can make that happen deserves some recognition. Im looking forward to this only getting better.

Great reference for students

This app is an easy-to-use handheld dictionary, verb conjugator, and kanji database all in one. You can even practice character stroke order or make a deck of flashcards. If you need one app to help you with Japanese, this is the best value by far!

bunch of features are missing or buried in a useless interface

Not a very good app. The write features and tests are not available. only grade 1 kanji available in flash cards. not acceptable for a paid app.
